Laboratory of Enteric Bacteriology

Activities of microbiological surveillance and research

Typhoid fever

  1. Application of ELISA, PHA (Passive Haemagglutination), rapid test (using serum and urine specimens) in research on typhoid fever.
  2. Research on production of diagnostic reagents for public health centers at provincial level: Vi sensitized sheep red blood cell, culture media.
  3. Follow up of the carrier status in patients after treatment and in their contacts (by stool culture).
  4. Examination of Vi antigen concentration by ELISA and PHA in the investigation of carrier of  Salmonella Typhi.
  5. Examination of drug resistance of Salmonella Typhi: Disk diffusion assay (technique of Kirby-Bauer), MIC and antibiotic resistance by molecular mechanism.

Diarrhea

  1. Surveillance on the important infectious diarrhoeal pathogens: Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., E.coli…
  2. Study on molecular epidemiology of Vibrio cholerae.
  3. Study  on the role of Kappa-phage (vibriophage) and application in prediction of cholera epidemic
  4. Study on rapid test for the diagnosis of dysentery.
  5. Study on opportunistic diarrhoeal pathogens in immunodeficiency people (HIV-infected subjects, malnutrition children, aged people…): Cryptosporidium, Microsporidia, Cyclospora, Isospora, Blastocystis, E.coli
  6. Study on virulent and toxin genes of E.coli pathogens: EPEC, ETEC, EHEC, EIEC, DAEC, EAggEc
  7. Study on antibiotics susceptibility and resistant mechanism of diarrhoeal bacteria.

Food-borne infections

  1. Detection of  bacterial pathogens in foods and specimens of cases with food poisoning
  2. Detection of LT, ST genes of E.coli isolated from foods and cases with food poisoning.

Checking and confirmation of isolated strains

  1. Determination of the antimicrobial activity of the medication, the extracts from plants, antimicrobial products…
  2. Isolation, detection and confirmation of the pathogens from clinical specimens

Prevention and control of biological agents (for biological war)

Determination of Bacillus anthracis.
