RABIES VACCINE

History:

The preliminary rabies vaccine was the inactivated rabies vaccine, that was discovered by Louis Pasteur in 1885. This vaccine was derived from the brain of the rabbit and saved Joseph Meister, 9 years old after he was bitten by a rabid dog. Subsequently, Louis Pasteur ‘s method of preparation of rabies vaccine was disseminated around the world.

Albert Calmette, the disciple of Louis Pasteur, who founded the Pasteur Institute in Saigon in 1891, applied the Pasteur method of rabies vaccine production in Saigon in 1891.

The methods applied in rabies vaccine production changed, initially, the vaccine was prepared from the brains of sheep, then the brains  of goats (Fermi and Semple method) and finally, the brains of 2-3 day old suckling mice (Fuenzalidae method).

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hanh was the first person to apply the Fuenzalidae method in Viet Nam and at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh city after 1975. Until now, we have used this method for rabies vaccine production in Viet Nam.
