CLINICAL AND BIOLOGICAL STUDY On A POPULATION OF DRUG ABUSERS, INFECTED AND NON INFECTED BY HIV, RESIDING AT BINH TRIEU CENTER, HCM CITY

Pasteur Intitute HCM city, Center for Preventive Medicine,

Center for Tropical Diseases, Binh Trieu centre,

National Association of AIDS Research, France (ANRS)

Objective

-                     Determination of the principal clinical and biological characteristics of the infection of HIV 1 in a target population.

-                     Evaluation of the feasibility of the cohort study with HIV seropositivity.

Results

Clinical status: Except the patients of pulmonary tuberculosis who reside in the specific center, the frequent clinical status is:

HIV +

HIV –

Zona

20%

0%

Candidiasis

58%

22%

Adenopathia

85%

Biological status:

HIV +

HIV –

Anemia

Thrombocytopenia

2%

CD4

337/ ml

719/ ml

CD8

1114 / ml

835 ml

In 60% of the HIV seropositive group, the numbers of CD4 are within 200 – 499/ ml.

The seroprevalence of the infection non-HIV as HTLV, HCV, HBV, CMV, HSV and VZV are strictly elevated in both of the groups HIV+ and HIV–. In the meantime, the prevalence of toxoplasmose is very low (<10%) in the both groups.

According to the classification table of CDC, we have the proportion of the subjects with HIV seropositive as follows:

            Stage A            :           24 %

            Stage B            :           34 %

            Stage C:           42%

Feasibility of the cohort study:

In the first year, among 300 of drug abusers recruited (12/1996) for the study, 254 were HIV seropositive, 46 HIV seronegative. After one year (1/98) we found only 119 HIV seropositive and 22 HIV seronegative. Among the seropositive subjects, 24 were deceased.

To ensure the sample for the study, 127 new subjects (55 with HIV+ and 72 with HIV–) were recruited.

The study will be realized every 6 months on the clinical consultation and the blood biological parameters.
