ABSTRACT

Hand, food and mouth disease (HFMD) is an enterovirus infection, including Enterovirus 71 (EV71), Coxsackie A16(CA16), Coxsackie A10(CA10)… but EV71 is more often associated with severe neurological diseases.

RD and Vero cells were used to isolate enterovirus, EV71 was identified by RT-PCR with primer specific for EV71 and a microneutralization assay with anti-serum against EV71. Among 70 patients HFMD at Children 's Hospital No.1 Ho Chi Minh City, 10 cas (14,2%) were infected byEV71. The patients were under 3 years old and live in some areas of the Southern VietNam. The preliminary results of this study suggest the circulation of EV71 in children with HFMD. A further study with larger amount of patients and longer time will be conducted to obtain more convincible results.
