ABSTRACT

Through the KAP investigation about Hepatitis B disease and vaccination, the descriptive and analytic cross-sectional study was selected sample on 838 the under one year children’s mothers with 60 Lots Probability Proportionate to Size method in Long An province, Vietnam in 2002. Most of mothers had the general knowledges about the damage of hepatitis B disease (82.6%), what reasons to get vaccination (71.1%), where you can get vaccination (92.2%) and what side effects of hepatitis B vaccine (72.6%). However, they knew less than about how can hepatitis B viruses spread (15.6%), how many shots are needed and schedule for children (24.2%) and the long-term protection after immunization (13.0%). Beside that, mothers had the high-level accepted attitudes about the necessary hepatitis B vaccine immunization (90.5%), the convenience of immunization sites (98.3%) and the continuous vaccination in spite of side effects (99.8%). Nevertheless, the mothers have achieved the low-level vaccination on schedule practices (30.5%). There are relationships between the vaccination on schedule practices and the residence of mothers (mothers are in commune better than in center - 2.5 times), the age of mothers (mothers are over 30 years old better than the younger - 2.38 times) or the knowledge of immunization sites (mothers know immunization sites are better - 3.7 times). In addition, they believed best the information of immunization from health worker (82.8%) and television (22.3%).

The study has showed that there are some unsuitable problems of education for hepatitis B vaccine and immunization. In order to enhance the coverage of vaccination and practices on schedule, the national expanded programme on immunization should improve form and content of education for immunization. Specially, the prior contents are immunization sites and the prior people are young mothers (under 30 years old) who have not experience about immunization for children.
